Red Bag Solutions announced today that the VA Hospital in Hines, Illinois has installed an SSM-150 unit to manage and dispose of infectious medical waste at its hospital location. “The system will provide safe
disposal of waste with a substantial reduction of operating costs,” noted Rao Vadlamudi, Chief, Planning/Project Section at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, Hines, Illinois. “Not only does the SSM
save institutions money by eliminating third party hauling, but also decreasing
both the labor needed for regulatory compliance documentation as well as short
and long term liability risks."
The SSM-150 simultaneously combines steam sterilization with maceration (SSM) to process both infectious medical waste on-site, in a single step. It transforms the waste, including sharps and sharps containers, into a
sterile, non-hazardous, and non-recognizable confetti-like material that can be disposed of as ordinary municipal trash. The SSM also has the ability to destroy confidential patient records, whether on paper, CD-ROM or any other information bearing media.
In addition to its ability to significantly reduce a hospital’s expenses associated with waste disposal, this revolutionary, patented technology is also noted for its ease of operation and its compatibility with the
environment.
“The SSM-150 is extremely compact with a ceiling height of 8 feet and space requirement of approximately 125 square feet. Therefore, its size and ease of installation offered the VA a great deal of flexibility when
locating the unit within the hospital. Additionally, Red Bag Solutions coordinated the complete site preparation avoiding unplanned capital and operational costs for our facility,” stated Vadlamudi.
“We are in a unique position of being a contractor on the GSA Schedule as well as having a national contract with AFMLO/VA. Federal agencies/ organizations can reduce their research, due diligence and cost justification
efforts by selecting the cost effective, environmentally safe SSM technology,” said Bill Norton, President of
Red Bag Solutoins.
“We are extremely pleased to have the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital select the SSM-150 for its medical waste destruction. Their decision to seek an environmentally safe alternative to hauling is reflective of their
leadership role in the healthcare industry and their concern for the surrounding community,” said Norton.
