Red Bag Solutions announced today that the USDA has purchased and installed an SSM-150 unit to manage and dispose of infectious agricultural waste including
animal bedding, at its Beltsville, Maryland location. “We have evaluated several technologies for the past couple of years," said Keith Hummel, Manager, Research Animal Services, ANRI, ARS, USDA. "It is important that we have a system that provides us with
an environmentally safe disposal process."
The SSM simultaneously combines steam sterilization with maceration (SSM) to process waste on-site, in a single step. It transforms hazardous
medical waste, including sharps and sharps containers, into a sterile, non-hazardous, and non-recognizable confetti-like material that can be disposed of as ordinary municipal trash while reducing the volume by
90%. The SSM also has the ability to destroy
confidential research records, whether on paper, CD-ROM or any other information bearing media.
In addition to its ability to significantly reduce a facility's expenses associated with waste disposal, this revolutionary, patented technology
is also noted for its ease of operation and its compatibility with the environment because it produces no odors or harmful emissions. The system provides safe disposal of waste with a substantial reduction of operation costs. "Our goal is to preserve
the environment while restraining the escalation of medical waste destruction costs," noted Wayne Funkhouser, Construction Manager, ANRI, USDA.
"We are extremely pleased to have such a prestigious governmental agency such as the USDA select the SSM for its agricultural medical waste
disposal needs," noted Dr. Sanford Glazer, Director of Technology for Red
Bag Solutions. "With its simple installation process and ease of operation, the
Red Bag Solutions' system allows facilities to discontinue hauling infectious waste off-site and thus, off the public highways," Dr.
Glazer added.
"Unlike other waste disposal methods, this solution has no adverse impact on the environment since the processed material is non-hazardous,
non-infectious, and non-recognizable, thereby reducing our client's associated liability and meeting OSHA's definition for unregulated waste," said Bill Norton, President.
